Camel Safaris in the Thar Desert

Camel Safari in Jaisalmer

Camel safaris are a popular activity for those visiting the Thar Desert in India.

Most people base themselves in Jaisalmer before heading off to the desert for their camel safari.

Hotels like Shahi Palace and Renuka in Jaisalmer organize great camel safaris for guests, as do agencies like Adventure Travel and Sahara Travels.

Camel safaris can be as short as an hour or as long as several days.

Most camel safaris involve some sightseeing in addition to an actual camel ride in the sand dunes.

Many safaris take you to the cenotaphs, the Jain temple, and a local village in the desert before your actual camel ride.

Camel safaris are led by local guides from villages in the Thar Desert.

They are very knowledgeable about the desert and the surrounding area.

Make sure to bring some extra cash to tip your guide at the end of the tour, as it will be expected.

Whatever length of camel safari you choose, make sure the hotel or agency that books your camel safari writes down everything that you will see, do, and eat as well as every camping provision that will be given to you (if on an overnight safari) before you hand over any money.

This will ensure that you get everything you are promised.

Prices for camel safaris in the Thar Desert range from around Rs. 500 for a day safari to around Rs. 1500 for a night.

Prices can vary widely from one operator or hotel to another, so shop around or negotiate for the best price.
