India is a vast country made up of many ethnic, cultural, and linguistic groups.
There are over a hundred languages spoken throughout India, but official language of India is Hindi, and its subsidiary official language is English.
That said, if you visit India you will hear many different languages depending on where you travel.
These include Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Maithili, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, and many others.
A good idea for those traveling to India is to get a phrasebook or a guidebook with a small phrasebook in the back.
Depending on which part of India you visit, you can get a phrasebook in the local language. Being able to say a few words to the locals in their native tongue goes a long way.
